For just the third time since its debut in 1996, Lexus is treating its big LX SUV to a complete makeover. The all-new 2008 Lexus LX 570, which goes on sale in early 2008, is larger, more powerful and offers greater off-road capability. The former 4.7-liter V8 is replaced by a 5.7-liter V8 rated at 381 horsepower and 401 pound-feet of torque. That's nearly 100 hp more than the old engine, while the 75 lb-ft boost in torque helps the LX 570 increase its tow rating from 6,500 to 8,500 pounds. A new six-speed automatic transmission replaces the five-speed automatic. Improved off-road capability is expected to come from a new active suspension design with electrohydraulic wheel control. Ride height control is also part of the package. Better off-road performance is expected as well from the LX 570's increased wheel travel. Lexus also says its new multiterrain ABS braking system reduces stopping distances on slippery off-road surfaces such as sand or gravel, as well as during everyday driving conditions.
